‘Kaki Lima’ literally translated from bahasa, means ‘five feet’, referring to the pedestrian sidewalks that the hawkers and food carts would gather at, creating impromptu eating destinations, which were always five feet wide. Kaki Lima’s modern take on Indonesian street food is filled with nostalgic childhood memories in Indonesia. From a young age, Kaki Lima’s founders were constantly exposed to the authentic and vibrant flavours of street food sold from ‘kaki lima’. These carts, a mish-mash of colours and wonderful aromas, would offer them a feast of nasi gila – literally crazy rice, rubber noodle, bala-bala vegie fritters, and much more. Although a quick feed, the food was always delicious and comforting; what they always turned to when they weren’t sure what to eat. In the spirit of the street food vendors back home, Kaki Lima’s concept is fast and snappy in delivery. We welcome you to experience the everyday Indonesian food served fast and tasty in the heart of Melbourne CBD.

Kaki Lima RMIT
I would call it a hidden gem near RMIT. The food is pretty affordable and doesn’t compromises on taste at all. I loved the volcano chicken bowl, had enough chilli to settle my spice kick and the chicken was tender and crispy. Highly recommend!

My favourite place to go to on campus, recommended by an Indonesian friend from school and never get disappointed here! Love their simple portion+vegie+main combo with such affordable prices. Love the cafe next to it too! Better than most of the cafe in city (lots of fun options).

I was looking for a cheap restaurant near the RMIT University, and I'm not disappointed! I discovered a nice dish from Indonesia like this!

My family came to try the matcha from k5 Kona. I tried matcha with ube cream and the new hojicha with tangerine cloud cream wow. We all collectively loved the ramen too!

Hiding away in the RMRT building is @KakiLima.au within a mini food court. Indonesian fast food, lots to choose from which is the battle. Cooked to order, I chose the crazy rice - a famous Jakartan street food dish that is deconstructed fried rice with delicious meat combo and rich sweet soy flavour. I also got an optional chicken piece on the side (can't resist some crunchy fried chicken). Wait is a bit long but worth it. Geprek chicken, fried, spiced, smashed and added to the top of the crazy rice. This didn't disappoint, everything you expect in crunchy spicy chicken, I loved it. Then there's the tender sweet soy braised beef atop the fried rice. It is a little rich but really tasty and along with the fried rice goes down a treat. Some corn chips for crunch. Enjoyable lunchtime meal. #IndonesianFood #lunch #crazyrice #deepfriedchicken #geprekchicken #friedrice #sweetsoybeef #Foodie #melbournefood #melbournecbd

love how affordable and good the food were. Their volcano chicken is a feast for spicy food lovers like me. Their crazy rice is also one of my favourites out of the many i have tried. it was tasty and full of flavours with the right portion (well a little too big for small eater) and for a reasonable price of just $12.90. I don’t think any place can beat this given the huge portion and quality of food. I’ll definitely be back to try their other new dishes.

Very friendly service. They have all their menu option clearly set out in print. I chose a set that included two proteins, a base (noodles or rice) two sides & a choice of sauce. I doubled up on fried chicken on rice with mentai sauce (like spicy mayo with fish roe), grilled cheese & crispy seaweed (basically furikake).. They chicken is chopped up so it gets well covered in the sauce. The food court is quite grubby but it’s a uni, so it’s a high traffic area.

Quick service and affordable price. The taste of nasi gila is similar with the one in jakarta, definitely will be back

😋💯 Just like the other one, this place has the same menu, good food at the same prices. The only downside is that they sometimes sell out pretty quickly, but there's always the other one to fall back on! As there was no lamb for the Lamb Fried Rice, i had the chicken version ($15.90) instead, which was fine.

The food here tastes really good. And the quantity is great. I cant finish a regular bowl in one sitting. The system is quiet efficient!🧡. A go to place for during during long class break.

I had Asem-Asem Koh You Lim at Kaki Lima, and it was amazing. It has a perfect mix of spicy and sour . Each bite taste really fresh and was full of flavor. We also tried their other menu, crazy rice, bala-bala corn and vegie fritter, and Bang J chicken noodle. All the food are cooked to perfection. Furthermore, their pricing is very affordable at time where everything is going up. Truly a hidden gem located at RMIT food court.

Really impressed by the value for money here. Granted, my meal was discounted due to a semester break special ($9.90), but the original price (~$12-14) is very affordable too. I really enjoyed their sour and spicy soup. Couldn’t quite figure out the name as the staff told me it was a different name to the one on the poster, but it’s essentially a tamarind soup with lemon, pork, tomato, green beans, spring onion, chili, and more. The rice comes with the soup at no extra charge. The soup was fresh and hot, with a great punch of flavour that really suits winter weather. I ate in the food court which was nearly empty, but I’d imagine that during semester it would be quite busy and chaotic. The dining area in front of the shop is a bit dark, so you’ll need to walk around to find a brighter spot. The restaurant itself is also tricky to find. If entering from Swanston St, go up the escalator and turn left. Overall, great food option that is really suitable for a student budget without compromising on taste!

My go-to lunch meal, their Crazy Rice in particular taste fantastic & awesome sambal chili (they have various spice levels, or simply request for non-spicy ones)! ps. Ivan was really quick & friendly when serving me at the counter, even provided me a drink as a good-will gesture.

Had their rice bowls before, authentic and affordable. One of the better stalls the university has for sure. Lamb fried rice was really yummy with their chilli, and the fried chicken skin was very crispy too.

Loved the vegetarian bowl! I chose volcano sauce was nicely spicy just as they had mentioned. The regular size bowl was filling for me and very tasty. Glad they offer a good vegetarian option.
