Being taken out to eat is a communion that we can all relate to as a species. Whether formal or casual, the spirit of celebrating time well spent together is usually around food and/or beverage. But when someone wants to show you a food – cuisine that’s near and dear to them, that’s like being invited into their home, and perhaps more esoterically, their heart. And both home and the heart are hungry and yearn to be fed. I was fortunate to be treated to Pontianak Cuisine for the first time – a region of Indonesia that has its roots in Southern Chinese dishes, with heavy use of meat, poultry and fish, nose-to-tail in most cases. On the surface, it looks like OG Canton/Bingsutt fare, i.e., something you’d find in a Hong Kong Tea House serving the Cantonese style of barbecued meats. Flavour and technique differentiate the Indonesian’s take on this though, with more herbs, spices, sauces and pickling involved in the preparation and serving. The rice noodle dish Yam Kwe Tiau Kalimantan is a dry/wet dish in the sense that it’s merely dashed with broth to slick the flat rice noodles. The toppings are either fresh or strewed with fried wontons to add texture. Very vinegary and surprisingly light and not oil heavy. The rice dish Nasi Kampur Kalimantan, has more of stewed richness to it with barbecued pork, egg and veggies laden over rice steeped in pork fat – not fried, but derived from stock so as not to be as oily but collagen rich. The pork shumai is completely different to Canton style too – largely meat forward like a Nonna’s meatball, made with similar parallels of saucy, soupy goodness (*note, it’s essential to eat these with a spoon to catch the vinegar and chilli dressing). All these dishes are heartwarming and well balanced – salty and sour, acidity and a hint of sweetness to undercut the savoury, fatty umami pockets in each bite. This kind of food is hands down my favourite in any culture – food that’s been around for far longer than I’ve been congniscent to wax lyrical about them.

Had early dinner here on 25 June 2025. We ordered Nasi goreng abang abang ($15) and Bakmi Ayam Komplit ($17.50) (see photo and video). Even though it was not too busy, there was a bit of a wait for the Nasi goreng (Bakmi came out first). The table is too short to sit and eat comfortably. The food is excellent.

I was letting fate choose my dinner tonight. No plans. No idea where I was. Walking past this place and the smell whacked me so hard I thought Sonny Bill had come out of retirement. Walking in, I was nervous. Feeling out of place. In the best way. I had no idea how to order and picked the first thing I saw. Idk what it was, but it was 11/10. If you’re reading this, come here. Don’t go to a pub. Incredible stuff.

Tried their nasi padang and nasi ayam kremes, and the bakwan, all were very nice. We didn’t wait long for our food, though restaurant was quite busy. Great job!

This cosy spot serves food from Padang in Sumatra. It kicks off the menu with variations of padang paket where you have an assortment of veg and proteins with rice wrapped in a banana leaf packet, the variety of flavour and texture fried and stewed soaking into the rice is great with a nice kick from the sambal. It is that feeling that it is a complete meal due to the variety that makes this style of food popular, and the variations that you can get mean thered a good combo here for everyone. I've seen a few folks scared off by the chilli but personally I found it a good heat but could do more, be sure to tell them if chilli is not your thing so that they can leave it out. Super tiny though but a good quality addition to the Indonesian corridor of the city developing around Sussex St. This one also has a couple of locations, being in Mascot also. It is usually pretty full of mostly Indonesians for dinner, though it's like an 80% full where you could reasonably grab one of the few tables, but turnover is fast too even if they are full. Despite that, food comes out at a reasonable pace.

Discovered a hidden gem in the city today. Had superlicious Indonesian fried chicken (ayam goreng kalasan) and Pontianak dessert (cehuntiaw brown sugar drink with green jelly at Warung Pojok, and I'm basically a foodie mastermind now.

So far the most tastiest nasi padang when I am here on my 5th days in Sydney. The only down is the space which is a bit small but luckily is not crowded either on my visit. Having Nasi padang and Nasi ayam penyet. Both are delicious. Recommended.

Tried different padang food in Sydney. As someone from Medan and consumed nasi padang at least once a week (back in Medan), I would like to say that this is the closest food I to home. I love the food so much that my girlfriend decided to buy the nasi padang on my birthday 😭. I really like the rendang, until I tried the babat, which has a lot of chillies (and I asked for more). Sayurnya cuma dikit (ga ada nangka, like your typical padang) but still, it is a really good restaurant.

Great Packets, maybe not as many items as the Medan Ciak ones and the chicken could be a larger serving in,but the juicy melt in your mouth beef Rendang makes up for it at least somewhat and is some of the best I've had. And the food comes out really quickly.

03 2025 I tried their new shop at town hall. Their foods are wonderful as same as before. And the space is more comfortable compared to the one before. Six small tables for two and one counter table for four single customers. I wish if they add fried drumstick chicken as a side dish. When I order ‘Nasi Padan’, I always need one more fried chicken. 01 2024 Unfortunately, Google map says it’s closed temporary. Is it correct? I didn’t visit the place by myself. 08 2023 If you love spicy hot and juicy East or south Asian food, especially home made style, this is the place. Someone said this is Indonesian food or others said it rather tastes like Indian food. Anyway when I ordered take away lunch, a cheerful stuff arranged my lunch for seven minutes. She gave me an alarm for pick up. Worth to trying. And I will come back here soon.

27-04-2025. Stumble upon this shop with Indonesian name on it. Good food with great portion. Ambience is simple.

If u are indonesian u must agree with me the taste not padang at all but still similar like foods in indo...but this is so spicy, wrapped in indonesian brown paper, and cheap.

This is the best Indonesian spot in the heart of CBD in my humble opinion, and under $15 dollars for a full banquet on a plate! I rate this place 11/10 if you want authentic, affordable Indonesian food! This is a place i can immerse myself into the food and only the food!

Their food was always tasty, but the restaurant was way too small and last time the service was a bit too slow cus many people eating. However, overall was good!

I've been to Warung Pojok a few times, and it's become a family favorite. My wife absolutely adores their Bakso Gepeng, while I can't get enough of their Nasi Padang. The Soy Drink is a must-try, and they offer a fantastic selection of Indonesian snacks. It's the perfect spot for takeout, but dining in can be a bit challenging due to limited seating. If you're looking for authentic Indonesian flavors, this place is a gem!
