Selamat datang to Ria Ayam Penyet - Founded by Ibu Ruth, this family-owned restaurant has been humbly serving true Indonesian food across South-East Asia for decades. To some, Ria is the taste of home, a nostalgic weekend family lunch at one of the many Ria’s across Indonesia. For others, it’s the taste of adventure, their first bite into a crispy Indonesian smashed chicken while on a business trip in Singapore. Now celebrating the flavours and handed-down family traditions of Indonesian street food on the streets of Australia. With no compromise of flavour and spices, staying true and authentic since 1998. Experience Ria, experience Indonesia.

A Fabulous Indonesian Gem in the City! 🇮🇩✨ This place never disappoints! My absolute favorite is their Soto Ayam — it’s always my go-to. This time, I also grabbed the anchovy crackers, and wow, so addictive! The fried squid was perfectly cooked, and the cendol was the sweetest way to finish the meal. Authentic flavors, great vibes — highly recommended!

I've been coming to Ria for a year and can safely say that they offer the best Indonesian food in Melbourne. Reasonably priced with generous portions. The food are cooked to order and always fresh

Ayam Penyet Ria never disappoints! I’ve always enjoyed the food here full of flavor and consistently satisfying. The duck (bebek) is a standout: crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and packed with taste. The bakso is also a favorite of mine comforting and flavorful. I’ll definitely be coming back again and again for those dishes. Highly recommended if you’re craving delicious Malaysian comfort food!

A quick fix that tastes like home. If you have cravings to eat indonesian street food, give this place a try! For the money spent and the food you get, I’d say it’s worth it. I had the ayam penyet with garlic sambal. the portion size is good and the chilli was just the right spicy. I love the tempe and fried tofu they serve as well. My friend ordered the bebek penyet, tastes good but the service took so long, like twice the amount I had to wait for my chicken. But the waiters are super friendly though! Go give this place a try if you haven’t!

Have been going here for 10 years, it's still the best ayam penyet in Melbourne. Sambal is consistently (very) spicy. Chicken is crunchingly fresh. Ayam Bakar is another favourite. Never goes wrong. More seats available upstairs but I'm told you now need to go thru the back of the building instead.

Dropped in for lunch and it was yummy. I had Rawon (beef soup) and martabak (pancake with peanuts and chocolate). My wife had a platter, forgot the name and everything was really tasty. Loved it thank you 🙏

Delicious and affordable food! The fried chicken 🍗 meal set was around $20 which includes a side of soup and a drink. Be very careful ordering the garlic chilli unless you can really handle your spice! 🌶️🥵 The beef ribs had a nice, smoky grill flavour. Both dishes were equally great. Would definitely recommend if you’re in the South Melbourne area.

Usually, suppose to be. Someone serving Indonesian food outside Indonesia, is not that good. They just bring Indonesian, or Asian name, to their menu, food, or their restaurant. But this is kinda different... I ordered bebek penyet and empal penyet. I'm not that expect more. But the food is taste good. The duck, man. I think the bone trying to release by themselves. So tender. Empal penyet. I thought, it's gonna be like small, tiny piece of cute cuts. But this, is HUGE. U DONT NEED TO ORDER RICE TO MAKE UR BELLY FULL ENOUGH. The tofu is the best ever, the tempeh is nice, duck tender, empal is tender, the sambal, is nice. Not that spicy, but I'm sweating cs everytime I ate good food, I'm sweating. I take away martabak terang bulan. Which is INDONESIAN. And the sambal. I just curious. So far, I underestimated all of Indonesian food that opened outside of Indonesia. Sceptic I know. I tried one slice of that martabak. BUSET.... bisa bisanya martabak ini lebih enak drpd martabak Di rumah. The dough, just melt out of Ur mouth. The chocolate and the cheese maybe not that much, but it just balance. I dunno why. But it's taste much better than what I experienced in Indonesia. I'm not that big fan of sweet treats especially martabak. But this one. Exceptable. I will coming back. For sure

Absolutely amazing food, more delicious than pictures can capture. The packs are a great deal but it honestly was more food than I could eat. The sauces are very spicy so if you’re not good with spicy food I’d go with their non-spicy options or just use a bit less of the sambal sauce. Highly recommend this place, have been here a few times and everything has been delicious. I love the chicken, the chicken soup is delicious and everything here has been absolutely amazing. The price is also really good value.

I really enjoyed my meal, but the portions were quite small for what you pay, and I do not recommend ordering the martabak or the soup.

The food is legit here and so delicious! The Soto betawi and the beef ribs were delicious! The duck was a bit dry and we wanted to try the chicken but it was sold out :( gado gado was average. Beef stew was also not as good. The sambal was hectic. The garlic one was especially delicious but careful as it was pretty hot! Really casual take away place with self service water and self order. Service as chill and friendly. Too bad the chicken was sold out!

We dine here regularly and always come back for their Ayam Bakar. Their snack range is quite impressive, and this is coming from an Australian who was born and raised in Indonesia! This place is definitely a decent place to satisfy your cravings for authentic Indonesian food.

Amazing food! What they do incredibly well: 1. That chilli sauce on the side. So lethal and you can tell from the amount of seeds in there that it’s going to be hell. But you just keep going back for more - not just spicy but full of aroma and goes so well with everything. 2. Meats have great flavour - the aromatics around the meat are very fragrant and get extracted very well from the process of deep frying. Nice crispy bits at the top as well. Comparing the ayam (chicken) vs bebek (duck) penyet, I would say there are parts on both that are a little too dry (but understandable given it’s the crisp and flavour they’re going for) but there are parts of the duck that have a nice fattiness running through it that helps keep the meat more moist and tender. The dry parts of the duck were drier than the chicken overall though. Rice was also slightly dry. But all in all a great plate of food, and at an affordable price.

Best penyet in town, the sambal is excellent!! Many options can be picked, and all are authentic Indonesian dishes. My favourite is bebek Madura, crispy tender duck, love it! Their soto ayam is still the best (compared to the other places)

Instagram: @ediblemelbourne WE WILL BE RETURNING REGULARLY We rocked up here at opening, around 11.30 am and we sat right next to the window seat facing Clarendon Street - best seat in the house. We were given menus promptly and were advised to order at the counter. We did so and quickly saw the Robot Waiter bringing our order - such a cool little experience - definitely added to a fun experience. We ordered Ayam Geprek (Crispy Chicken Chop), Ayam Penyet (Smashed Chicken), Sate Madura (Charcoal Grilled Satay Chicken Skewers), Iga Bakar (Grilled Beef Ribs). We absolutely loved the Ayam Penyet and it was accompanied with a generous side of sambal - I think these guys will easily take the award for the spiciest sambal in menu - and it is delicious. Do order the satay chicken as a side, it is a great little add on and so delicious - even used a spoon to scoop out all the yummy satay from the plate. The crispy chicken chop was super crunchy and fresh, with some fresh salad on the side that makes you want to keep going back for more. We finished our experience with some sweets - the coconut and palm sugar rolls are to die for - could order so many of those and keep eating them. The creams puffs are so good as well. Just the best little bites. Service is super friendly and unpretentious. We cannot wait to return to try so much more. Did we mention that they have other stores in Preston, Dandenong and Noble Park?

Great food and well worth the short wait. The Nasi Goreng had an amazing depth of flavour with a perfect little spice kick that kept it interesting. The Beef Rendang was also excellent – tender, good quality beef in a rich sauce that really hit the mark. Would definitely recommend if you’re after authentic, tasty dishes done really well.
